Alder has a fine balance of desirable properties for furniture, casework, railings, cabinets, doors, window frames and other applications.

It is a naturally light colored wood that can be finished in both dark and light styles and can be matched to other commercial woods now being used.

Alder can easily match Cherry, Walnut, Pecan, Maple, Mahogany, Aspen and Birch finishes.

Both the heart wood and sap wood are the same light golden color, and accept stains, dyes and finishes the same consistent way.

Alder is beautiful in its own right, and today is often considered better looking and more organically 'woodsy' than birch.

The U.S. Forest Products Laboratory study on Comparative Wood Features shows Alder to rate 9 or 10 (10 being top of the scale) in terms of:
Finishing
Character Interest
Color Uniformity
Machining
Sanding
Polishing
Joint Strength
Gluing
Fastening

Another important factor in favor of using Alder is that the price histories of Cherry, Hard Maple and White Oak show higher rates of increase over time than the price of Alder.

Good wood, good price.
